94*sin(18) down and 94*cos(18) along. It's a right angle triangle with the 94m path along the hypotenuse.

THE two components?

A vector can be resolved into any two components where they are not parallel to each other.

You may presume that the lecturer wants horizontal and vertical components but this is not a strict requirement.

In effect the horizontal component is how far the sub moves horizontally when he moves 94 m at 18 deg below the horizontal.

You draw the triangle and remember all those trig identities you learned in year 9

Horizontal = hypotenuse * cos(18)

= 94 cos(18)

Vertical is the opposite side of the triangle

sin( theta) = opposite / hypotenuse

so opposite ( vertical component ) = hypotenuse * sin(theta)

= 94 * sin(18)
