I've used Rosetta Stone and I don't see why it wouldn't be successful for young people. (I would recommend the learner be able to read first). The lessons are less boring and tedious and a different style of learning than book lessons. If you're concerned, try the free lessons at online-language-courses.com/, and if those are helpful then Rosetta should be as well.
