There are two waves produced by and earthquake, P waves and S waves . P waves moves the earth in an up and down motion, while S waves have side to side motion.

Depending on what the ground is made of where the earthquake happens depends on what happens to the earth. If the ground is solid such as granite or any other very hard rock the ground make crack open up, rise , or even sink.

Water rich soil and sandy soil act very different, it doesn't do much it only turns to goo and sinks anything built on it sinks with it.
