Position might mean the co-ordinates in which case the co-ordinate values are scalar quantity. While if represented by cylidrical co-ordinates the radius R will be a vector with its distance and direction both, similarly the individual co-ordinates can also be representated by vectors. R will be the resultant vector of X, Y & Z.
