If I run out of one SSRI antidepressant can I take another temporarily to avoid discontinuation syndrome?

Sorry if this is a silly question I don't know much about the drugs. I have run out of Fluoextine (Prozac) and my GP is closed until Tuesday but I still have some Sertraline (Zoloft).

You still have enough of this drug in your system that a reaction is unlikely. But to be sure, you must call the emergency or night numbers for the medical exchange in your area to get this approved. You can get this approval faster through the drug store pharmacist, who has faster access to the doctors.

The truth of the matter is that it most likely wouldn't do you any harm. They are both considered selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's), so they presumably act via the same or very similar mechanism in the brain, i.e. they inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. Of course there are so many antidepressants on the market because not all work for all people. There certainly is biologic variation. So, Zoloft may not work for you, and maybe that's why you were switched to Prozac. Bottom line, it won't hurt to substitute, but it may not help either.
