Let l be the length of the rectangle.

Let w be the width of the rectangle.

length is 10 times width

l = 10w

area is length times width

a = lw

490 = lw

SUB the first into the second:

490 = (10w)(w)

10w^2 = 490

10w^2/10 = 490/10

w^2 = 49

√w^2 = √49

w = 7

If width is 7, then length is

l = 10w

l= 10(7)

l= 70

Therefore the width is 7cm and the length is 70cm.

L=10*W

A=L*W=10*W*W=490

W^2=490/10

W=7cm
