Can someone please help me and explain this quote from civil disobedience?

__"If I devote myself to other pursuits and contemplations, I must first see, at least, that I do not pursue them sitting upon another man’s shoulders. I must get off him first, that he may pursue his contemplations too."

I'm having trouble figuring it out and putting it into words

Thanks for your help

He seems (to me) to be saying that enlightenment depends on personal experience and personal thought. There's lots of stuff you can learn from others, like mentors or teachers, but not this, this you have to learn on your own, you must do your own original thinking.
