if the marble were dropped from a very great height (say a kilometer instead of 1.200 m), why would the final kinetic energy before impact be less the initial potential energy?

The reason is because of air resistance. When dropped from that high the marble will reach what is called terminal velocity. This is where the marble stops accelerating and is now constant. So instead of all the PE being converted to KE some Energy is going off as heat energy. The air molecules are causing drag and will receive some of the PE in the form of heat. When the ball is dropped from a short distance the object doesnt have enough time to reach terminal velocity, so pretty much all the PE converts to KE (actually in theory if there are any air molecules around the falling object some energy will be given off to the molecules, but shorter drops have such a small effect its normally not counted).....Hope this helps
