I was taught to always use the GUESS method:

Given:

μ=.20 (μ is the coefficient of friction), m=205kg, Fapplied=720N

Unknown: a=?

Equations:

μ*Fn=Ff

The crate is on a flat surface so Fg=Fn

Now we have μ*Fg=Ff

Fg=m*g so μ*m*g=Ff

If we sum up the horizontal forces we get Fapplied-Ff=ma

Substitution: Fapplied-μ*m*g=ma

Solve for a: (Fapplied-μ*m*g)/m=a

That is the working equation.

Subtitution:

(720N-.20*205kg*9.8)/205kg=a
