Check the body and it there are only two obvious body parts, the head and abdomen, they are termites. Flying ants have an obvious head, thorax and abdomen.
Summertime is when ants swarm. Termites are more likely to swarm in the spring.
an ant with wings is either a new queen or a male ant..ant colonies produce a group of ants with wings and on a nice sunny warm day all the male and fertile females fly in the air and mate. the male dies and the female begins to look for a new home away from her old colony. when she finds a good spot she lays eggs. then she rips off her wings and feeds them to her young then once the young are mature they look for food and starrt extending the tunnels.
